The complaints of Colocynthis arise from exciting emotions. The patient becomes ill because of anger or annoyance, because of a perceived slight or after being upset about an injustice. As a result of this inner turmoil, insomnia, diarrhea, suppressed menstrual flow and all sorts of other complaints occur. What is particularly typical is the development of abdominal colic, which is characterized as follows: The patient feels excruciating pain in the stomach, like sharp stones rubbing against each other. This pain forces him to double over, press something hard into his stomach, or lean his stomach over chairs, tables, and bedposts. External heat improves the symptoms and the slightest food or drink worsens them, with coffee being an exception; it improves the stomach pain.

In addition, Colocynthis is suitable for sciatic complaints, which, like Rhus toxicodendron, are accompanied by numbness of the leg and are improved by heat, with the difference that with Colocynthis movement worsens.

Colocynthis acts on rheumatic joint diseases that are worsened by exercise. It cures arthritic inflammation of the eyes and divergent strabismus when the other symptoms match.
