The action of Mecurius (mercury), which has a deep influence on all tissues of the human body, is characterized by the following characteristics:

Sensitivity to heat and cold. Like the mercury in thermometers, patients react very sensitively to temperatures that are too high or too low. They catch colds easily and are sensitive to any draft (especially the head). Nevertheless, heat worsens symptoms. Eye symptoms are worsened by heat.

Worse at night. This point applies to all symptoms. Bone pain or toothache, worse at night, are particularly reminiscent of Mercurius (the toothache is relieved by rubbing the cheek).

Copious sweat that does not bring relief is an important indication of Mercurius. Sweating can actually worsen the patient's symptoms.

Mercurial, malodorous smell is an important point. All secretions and fumes are affected, saliva, breath, sweat, ear discharge, nasal secretions, etc. The secretions are also caustic, acrid and excoriating, causing the surrounding tissues to become red and sore. The secretions may also be bloody (for example, ear discharge or semen), thin, or yellowish-green. Some secretions have a more viscous character, such as saliva. Here follows a description of the symptoms of the mouth, which can occur in all diseases and represent an important indication of Mercurius as a remedy: The tongue is swollen, flabby, coated and the impressions of the teeth are visible on the side. The saliva flows in large quantities, even at night, and smells foul and foul. The corners of the mouth can be sore and canker sores can be found on the oral mucosa (Mercurius is one of the most important remedies for mouth rot in small children). The teeth are black, tooth root abscesses occur and the gums, like the oral mucosa, are in an inflamed state.

The next important trait of Mercurius is trembling. Everything shakes, which is why it is a cure for Parkinson's disease. A special note is the trembling of the tongue when sticking out. It cures stuttering and it also treats the delirium tremens of alcoholics (it causes aversion to alcohol).

Under the influence of Mercurius, pus forms. This smells bad and sometimes it is bloody. Any type of inflammation and ulceration with suppuration suggests Mercurius (purulent otitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, tooth root abscess, chronic sinusitis, etc.)

In connection with the inflammation, the lymph nodes enlarge.

Mercurius is particularly suitable for light-haired people with loose skin and muscles. It is suitable for precocious children.

The psyche of the Mercurius patient is very striking. He is in a big hurry and speaks very quickly. On the other hand, memory loss occurs, patients become sluggish and answer questions very slowly. Homesickness is part of the picture, as is the tendency to commit suicide. The sick are very quick-tempered and, at the slightest insult or anger, have the desire to kill the perpetrator. Particularly striking is the urge to stab a loved one, such as one's husband or child, at the sight of a knife.

Mercurius helps with hepatitis, when the liver is enlarged and tender. A special feature is that lying on the right. side is impossible for the patient as it worsens the pain.

It also has a particular effect on the bones and heals exostoses (bone outgrowths), bone caries with destruction of the bones and rickets (see Calc.).
